Category 6 cable is for computer networks 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX and 1000BASE-T/1000BASE-TX. The maximum length allowed is 100 metres when used for 10/100/1000baseT and 37 metres when used for 10GbaseT. This applies for UTP cables only. Shielded (FTP) CAT6 and Cat 6a cables are capable of 10GbaseT up to 100m. Category 6a (or Augmented Category 6) is defined at frequencies up to 500 MHz—twice that of Cat. 6
The Category 7 cable standard has been created to allow 10 Gigabit Ethernet over 100 m of copper cabling (also, 10-Gbit/s Ethernet now is typically run on Cat 6a). Cat 7 cable is rated for transmission frequencies of up to 600 MHz, 1000 Mhz versions are also available in limited form.
These 4 pair structured wiring cables allow voice, data and video to run through the same system, preparing the building for future needs. The standard cables have solid plain copper cores, flexible versions (also known as patch cables) of Cat 6 and 6A cables are available in various colours.
